WebGigantopithecus was an extinct genus of large apes that inhabited the forests of Asia around 9 million years ago until its extinction approximately 100,000 years ago. Compared to modern-day great apes like gorillas and orangutans, Gigantopithecus was estimated to be much larger, with adults potentially weighing up to 1,200 pounds.
Gigantopithecus blacki was named by anthropologist Ralph von Koenigswald in 1935 based on two third lower molar teeth, which, he noted, were of enormous size (the first was "Ein gewaltig grosser (...)
